Jaime Hayon - Hotel Barceló Torre de Madrid
If there is one designer that invokes a sense of fun in everything he does it has to be Jaime Hayon. He has turned his hand to numerous creative endeavours during his incredibly successful career so far, producing furniture collections for iconic product and design houses, exhibiting in museums and galleries worldwide, designing spaces for shops and hotels. Which brings me to his latest project, the Hotel Barceló Torre de Madrid.
Born in Madrid it was only fitting to use Jaime Hayon to create this new hotel space, a homage to Spain and it's culture, history and art. Situated within one of Madrid's most iconic modern buildings, the Torre de Madrid, it is right in the heart of the city. And I have to say it looks absolutely stunning!
Furnished with some of Hayon's classic seating and lighting designs as well those of other luxurious and superbly crafted design brands such as Gubi and BD Barcelona and utilising a colour palette throughout that oozes style, the result is sophisticated and elegant. However, you're never far away from one of Hayon's avant-garde touches making this a truly unique place to stay and a complete experience in it's own right.
Hayon has alluded to many aspects of Spain's past, such as Moorish architecture and pieces of art which reference Almodovar, bullfighting and other cultural icons.
Perhaps one of the most interesting elements is the giant zebra striped bear welcoming visitors with a tip of it's hat in the lobby, very typically Hayon injecting fun and playfulness thoughout whilst, in this instance, connecting to the very traditional coat of arms of Madrid at the same time.
The bar area is just beautiful. A combination of gold, marble, teal and wood and an incredibly tall drinks cabinet create an opulent and luxurious space - the perfect place to begin or end an evening in Madrid.
And all this just from looking at the photos! Unfortunately, I haven't visited the hotel - yet! - but it is now firmly placed on my list of weekend breaks this Spring when I can hopefully provide more photos and share intricate details of this gorgeous new hotel. Well done Jaime!
